The children killed were Rhoam Summer, 5, and two other pupils aged 8 and 11. Their teacher, Megan Lambert, 25, also died. The families of the two older children asked police not to release their names.
Police said four adults and five children were inside the special education classroom when the shooting occurred. Two people were wounded: education assistant Becky Drury, 54, and pupil Saylor Graham, 7.
Parents investigate school security and gun purchase
Rhoam’s parents have hired attorneys to examine the school’s safety arrangements and how the gunman obtained his weapon. Their inquiry will include whether the school had an active-shooter protocol, said Tim Williams, co-lead counsel for the family.
The attorneys also plan to examine where the shotgun was purchased and what the seller knew about its intended recipient. Law enforcement officials briefed on the investigation told CNN and The Associated Press that the gunman’s mother bought the weapon.
It remains unclear whether she will face charges. The Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office told CNN on October 19 that the investigation remained open and active.
Teacher and parent intervened
Police identified the attacker as Griffin J. John II, a former Silver Rail student. He had previously attended special education classes there, but officials could not confirm whether he had been taught in the classroom he attacked.
A teacher tackled John and tried to take away his shotgun, police said. Kaylub Giamanco, 36, a father of two children at the school, had seen the armed teenager outside and followed him inside. Giamanco then fatally shot him.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said John used a Maverick 88 pump-action 12-gauge shotgun. He had about 44 rounds of ammunition remaining.
The motive remains unknown. A senior law enforcement official told CNN that investigators interviewed John’s parents and searched his home, seizing computers and other electronics. Local investigators and the FBI planned to examine the devices for evidence.
District prepares for students’ return
Drury suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries. Her husband said on October 19 that her condition continued to improve. Police had described Graham’s condition on October 16 as serious but stable.
Police expected to return the Silver Rail building to the school district on October 19. Students at other district schools were due back on October 21, with officers stationed in and around campuses for the foreseeable future.
Bend-La Pine’s superintendent, Cook, said the district had invested in security cameras, door locks and fencing. Every school holds lockdown drills twice a year, he said, and the district would review what further safety measures were needed.
