Junior Caminero’s sixth-inning double put Tampa Bay ahead before a three-run seventh widened the lead. Yandy Díaz added a two-run home run in the ninth to complete the scoring.
The victory guaranteed another home game for the Rays in St. Petersburg. Rain had pushed Game 4 from Friday to Saturday, removing the travel day before the series returned to Florida.
Caminero puts Tampa Bay ahead
Cleveland took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Chase DeLauter’s run-scoring single. But Tampa Bay starter Nick Martinez limited the Guardians to one run and two hits over 5 1/3 innings, earning the win.
Caminero broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth with a double off Cleveland reliever Daniel Espino. His drive to the left-field wall brought home the run that gave Tampa Bay a 2-1 lead.
The Rays extended that advantage in the seventh after Richie Palacios and Taylor Walls reached base on singles. A double steal moved both runners into scoring position before Jonathan Aranda came to bat.
Three-run seventh opens the gap
Aranda singled to right field, bringing Palacios home. DeLauter let the ball pass under his glove, allowing Walls to score and Aranda to reach third.
Chandler Simpson then hit a sacrifice fly, a caught fly ball that allowed Aranda to score. The three-run inning put Tampa Bay ahead 5-1.
Cleveland answered in the bottom of the seventh. Travis Bazzana hit a home run, and Brayan Rocchio added a run-scoring single to narrow the deficit to 5-3.
Díaz restored Tampa Bay’s four-run advantage with his ninth-inning home run off Matt Festa. Aranda finished with three hits and two runs batted in, while Díaz had two hits and drove in two runs, Newsday reported.
Series returns to a three-game contest
Rays manager Kevin Cash said he was pleased with Caminero’s solid contact, Aranda’s contribution and Díaz’s late home run. Aranda said the hitters’ improvement had been a matter of time, but stressed that the team’s work was unfinished.
Bazzana said Cleveland needed to put the defeat behind it and concentrate on the next game. The tied series left each team needing two wins from a maximum of three remaining games.
Game 5 was scheduled for October 18 in Cleveland, with Parker Messick starting for the Guardians against Tampa Bay’s Drew Rasmussen. Game 6 was scheduled for October 19 in St. Petersburg.
