Russia launched a large missile and drone attack across Ukraine on October 7, killing at least 28 people, according to reports. Five children died in a residential building in Pryluky, a city in the northern Chernihiv region. The attacks also targeted energy infrastructure and disrupted services in the capital, Kyiv.

Residential building hit in Pryluky

The main accounts described a missile hitting the Pryluky building at about 6:30 a.m. local time. The explosion destroyed nearly half the building and shattered windows in nearby homes. Emergency crews searched the rubble for survivors.

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski said 20 people had been killed in the building. Ukraine's Interior Ministry later said rescuers had recovered the body of a fifth child during the evening.

A Romanian news outlet reported that the following morning's toll in Pryluky had reached 22 dead and 54 injured. The injured included seven children, and emergency crews had rescued 15 people. Rescuers continued clearing rubble and dismantling damaged structures.

The overall toll remained provisional, with differing casualty figures for Pryluky and conflicting accounts of the weapon that hit the building. Two deaths were also reported in Oleksandria and two in Kremenchuk, both in central Ukraine. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported four deaths in the capital.

Energy infrastructure and air defenses

Zelenski said the attack involved about 70 missiles, many of them ballistic, and drones sent toward 12 regions. The Ukrainian Air Force said it intercepted five ballistic missiles, 39 cruise missiles and more than 100 drones.

Zelenski said energy infrastructure was one of the main targets. Power cuts affected parts of Kyiv during the evening, disrupting traffic and water supplies on the capital's western bank of the Dnipro River.

The Ukrainian president called on Western allies to supply more air-defense systems. He particularly requested equipment capable of intercepting ballistic missiles.

Russia gives a different account of targets

Russia's Defense Ministry said its forces targeted Ukrainian military-industry facilities in Kyiv and its surrounding region, Pryluky and Kremenchuk. It said these included sites assembling or storing Flamingo cruise missiles and long-range drones. That account was not independently confirmed.

Zelenski also said Ukrainian strikes hit two oil facilities and a military training ground in Russia's Perm, Samara and Astrakhan regions. Separately, authorities installed by Moscow in occupied Ukrainian territories reported four deaths from Ukrainian attacks: two in Kherson region, including a teenage girl, and two in a village near Donetsk.
