Kaio Jorge's early goal gave Cruzeiro a 1-0 derby win over Atlético-MG at Arena MRV on Thursday, and a second-half collision sent defender Vitão off in an ambulance. The result also extended Kaio Jorge's strong record in the rivalry.
Kaio Jorge strikes early
Cruzeiro started fast and converted one of its first attacks into the match's only goal. Keny Arroyo advanced down the right and crossed for Kaio Jorge, who arrived ahead of the marking and finished after four minutes.
That opening strike forced Atlético-MG to chase the game for the rest of the night. Cruzeiro defended its early lead and looked to exploit spaces on the counterattack.
Atlético-MG pushes without finding an equaliser
Atlético-MG spent much of the match trying to build pressure through possession, but it struggled to turn its possession into clear chances. Cruzeiro stayed compact, protected the box and looked to break quickly when the home side pushed forward.
Cruzeiro protected its lead while looking for opportunities to extend it. In a game that carried weight in the 33rd round of the Campeonato Brasileiro, that approach proved enough to leave Belo Horizonte with all three points.
A second-half collision changes the tone
The match briefly shifted in the seventh minute of the second half, when defender Vitão collided with goalkeeper Gabriel Delfim during a challenge in the area. Vitão left the pitch by ambulance, and Léo Duarte came on in his place.
The sources do not report Vitão's condition after the incident. The episode came after the goal itself, even though the match was still 1-0 at that point.
Kaio Jorge’s derby record grows again
After the final whistle, Kaio Jorge said concentration was the key to his success in classics against Atlético-MG and described his teasing of the club as natural rather than forced. He has now scored eight goals in 11 derbies against Atlético-MG, with four wins, four draws and three defeats.
For Cruzeiro, the win was another important step in a season where each league result carries extra value. For Atlético-MG, it was a home defeat decided early and never recovered.
