Russian airstrikes on Ukraine on the night of September 26 resulted in deaths and injuries in several regions of the country. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported two deaths in Zaporizhzhia and 14 people injured across the country. According to him, residential areas of Kyiv, as well as parts of the Odesa, Sumy, Kharkiv, Poltava, Mykolaiv, and Vinnytsia regions, came under fire.
Ukrainian authorities also reported damage to civilian infrastructure. In Kyiv, a residential building, a kindergarten, and a high school were reportedly hit. In the Kharkiv region, a university was damaged, while in the Poltava, Mykolaiv, and Vinnytsia regions, energy facilities were damaged. There is no independent confirmation of these reports in the materials provided.
Casualties of Russian Strikes
In Sumy, according to local authorities, two people were killed and six were injured as a result of a Russian airstrike. A one-and-a-half-year-old girl was among the injured. In the Dnipropetrovsk region, two more people were killed, including a 17-year-old girl; two people were injured, among them a six-year-old child.
Reports on the number of casualties are inconsistent. One publication cites Zelenskyy’s figures of two dead in Zaporizhzhia and 14 wounded across Ukraine, while another lists the fatalities in Sumy and the Dnipropetrovsk region separately. This may reflect different points in time for the tally, but the exact final figure is not specified in the reports.
Zelenskyy stated that Russia is “escalating the conflict every day” and called on allies to respond more forcefully. The Ukrainian president called on the U.S. and the European Union to strengthen sanctions, restrict trade with Russia until the war ends, and not exclude Russian oligarchs from sanctions lists.
Ukrainian Attacks in Russia
Kyiv confirmed the use of drones against the “Ilsky” oil refinery in the Krasnodar Krai and a defense facility in the Rostov Oblast. Zelenskyy described these facilities as linked to Russian military capabilities. The extent of the damage to the facilities was not specified in the reports.
Russian authorities reported casualties resulting from the Ukrainian attacks. According to reports, two or three people were killed in the Krasnodar Krai after drone debris fell, and two others were injured. In the Belgorod region, local authorities reported one fatality from a strike on a facility, though another report mentioned two women injured in a car.
Fatalities were also reported in Russian-controlled areas of Ukraine. Moscow-appointed authorities reported three fatalities in the occupied part of the Zaporizhzhia region and three fatalities in the Kherson region following drone attacks. This information has not been independently confirmed.
Kyiv’s Demands and Moscow’s Response
Zelenskyy requested an additional $27 billion from partners for defense needs, including the purchase of drones and missiles for the coming months. The reports do not indicate whether the U.S. or European countries have approved this funding.
Speaking in St. Petersburg, Russian President Vladimir Putin threatened harsher strikes against Ukraine. He linked this to a recent attack by Ukrainian drones on Moscow, which was reported in the context of the Russian parliamentary election day.
Thus, the reciprocal strikes have affected not only frontline areas but also major cities, industrial facilities, and energy infrastructure. Both sides continue to claim that the attacks were aimed at military targets; however, published reports also indicate civilian casualties. The number of dead and injured may change as new data becomes available from emergency services.
