2K and Gearbox Software say the Borderlands franchise has crossed 100 million units sold, a milestone that puts fresh attention on a series that has been running for more than a decade. The announcement also came with a look at what players can expect next from Borderlands 4, as Gearbox moves beyond its completed first-year roadmap.

The sales figure marks a milestone for the series. To mark the milestone, Borderlands games are on sale for a limited time, giving both returning players and newcomers a discount window across the franchise.

Borderlands 4’s first year is now complete

Borderlands 4 launched just over a year ago, and Gearbox said its Year 1 roadmap is finished. Over that period, the game received two Story Packs, five Bounty Packs and two new Vault Hunters, along with two free raid boss encounters and an endgame raid called Takedown.

Gearbox also said the first 12 months brought feature updates, quality-of-life changes and optimisation work. For players, that means the studio is not treating Borderlands 4 as a one-off release, but as a live game with a continuing content plan.

What changes next

The studio said it is already working on new Borderlands 4 content for 2027. Weekly activity refreshes and community challenges will continue in the meantime, and Gearbox said it is also considering broader questions about character arcs, storylines and the franchise’s overall direction.

The company is asking players to keep sending feedback through social media and the Gearbox Devcast, its regular developer update show. Gearbox did not give a detailed timetable or reveal the shape of the 2027 additions, so the announcement is a marker of direction rather than a full roadmap.

The Hunt returns on November 6

The news also ties into The Hunt, a community fundraising event for Borderlands players that starts on November 6. Earlier this year, the event raised a record $118,995.80 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which focuses on childhood disease treatment and research.

This time, 2K Foundations and Gearbox said they will match donations dollar for dollar up to the previous record amount, which could push the total past $230,000. That gives the sales milestone a practical side beyond sales: a fundraising drive tied to a long-running Borderlands community event.
