Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in Texas on November 4, listing $677,054 in assets against debt reported at more than $3.2 million or more than $3.45 million. The filing puts his Super Bowl LVIII ring up as collateral for legal fees, while much of the debt is linked to lawsuits following a 2024 Dallas crash.
What the filing says about Rice’s finances
The reported debt totals differ. Fox News put the figure at more than $3.45 million; CBS News Texas reported more than $3.2 million owed to 20 creditors. The accounts do not explain the difference, but both figures are far above the $677,054 in assets reported in the filing.
Those assets include $421,825 in deferred compensation, a Mercedes-Benz valued at $53,800, and $13,640 in deposits across three bank accounts. Rice listed no home or other real estate and reported renting a residence. He also reported earning $1.25 million so far in 2026.
The filing lists Rice’s Super Bowl LVIII ring, valued at $160,000, as collateral for attorney Thomas M. McMurray’s legal fees. It attributes $2.1 million of debt to lawsuits and identifies the largest creditor as owed $979,837 under a 2025 civil settlement connected to the crash.
The legal disputes behind the debt
The crash happened on North Central Expressway in Dallas on March 30, 2024. Rice was driving a Lamborghini and his friend Theodore “Teddy” Knox was driving a Corvette when the Lamborghini hit the center median wall, causing four other vehicles to collide with one another. Rice’s arrest affidavit said he was driving 119 mph and Knox 91 mph; the posted speed limit was 70 mph.
Victims of the crash filed lawsuits seeking a combined $700,000. Rice’s former girlfriend separately sued him for $200,000, alleging that he assaulted her between 2023 and 2025. Rice’s bankruptcy filing says he disputes some debts connected to pending civil lawsuits; the allegations in the former girlfriend’s suit are not a court finding.
A guilty plea, probation and unresolved claims
In July 2025, Rice pleaded guilty to collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury. His plea deal included a 30-day jail sentence to be served during five years of probation, and he was suspended for six games at the start of the 2025 NFL season.
Rice was arrested on May 19, 2026, after failing a drug screening required by his probation. He was ordered to serve the jail sentence and released on June 16. The bankruptcy filing does not resolve how the court will treat the reported debts or whether any will be discharged, and the outcomes of the pending civil lawsuits remain unknown.
